Tune-Up

What to Expect

Tune-ups for horses needing a refresher to previously established training. Whether coming back from an injury, off-season or simply having to sit due to life circumstances, we work to tune up the horse to its previous capabilities. Tune-Ups are for horses previously trained beyond a colt starting level with no current buck, kick, or other dangerous behavior (ask us about our behavioral concern training options if needed). Tune-ups offered on a full-time, part-time, or ongoing basis based on the needs of the horse and owner.  During a tune-up the horse will learn a refresher based on previous training abilities including but not limited to the:

  • Safe handling, mounting, and patience on standing

  • Refresher on ques of riding such as isolation of head, shoulder, and hindquarters

  • Even tempo/ queuing of walk, trot, lope

  • Increased muscle tone- based on the capabilities of the individual horse

  • Bridling- Bosal; exposure to non-shanked bits though will not be worked in until deemed necessary

  • Desensitizing- tarps, flags, soccer balls, ropes, saddle bags, etc. No specific trail course work promised at this level of training.

  • Etc, based on previous training

If a horse is removed from training prior to completion of the tune-up, Arizona Performance Horses offers no guarantee of the accomplishment of training and outcomes.

Possible exposure options, though no guarantee:

  • Dogs, cattle, goats, lambs, and other livestock

  • Competition- UPRA, AABRA, NHSFR, PRCA, AQHA, EXCA, NRCHA, NCHA, AZCHA, SACHA, 4-H, SABRA, team roping, barrel racing, rodeo- depending on availability

  • Equipment- skid steers, tractors, backhoes, semis, etc.

  • Fire/ Fireworks/ Firearms

  • Snake exposure/ training

  • Trail course- while trail course work is not offered at this level of training it is possible some horses will have exposure to certain obstacles based on availability

  • Etc

While we offer no guarantee of a timeline for a horse to complete tune-ups, on average we expect to complete tune-up training between 30-60 days. If a longer time is needed, the Arizona Performance Horses trainer will discuss other needed training options with the owner. If something on the possible exposure option is highly important or other desired goals, please discuss it further with Arizona Performance Horses trainers to ensure as much exposure as possible.

Tune-Ups are offered on-site and off-site on a full-time or part-time basis based on the needs of the horse and owner/ rider.
