Barrel Racing

What to Expect

Barrel Racing is for horses either getting started on the barrel pattern or needing to improve their current performance. Whether never experiencing the pattern, needing to improve on current performance, or simply looking to improve performance we work to aid the horse to the best of its capabilities. Barrel racing is for horses previously trained beyond a colt starting and tune-up level with no current buck, kick, or other dangerous behavior (ask us about our behavioral concern training options if needed). Barrel racing is offered on a full-time, part-time, or ongoing basis based on the needs of the horse and owner.  On-site is strongly encouraged to ensure the proper tools and space needed for training. During the barrel racing program, several topics will be worked on such as:

  • Introduction of pattern

  • Holding frame

  • Keeping/ correcting shoulder drop

  • Barrel departure

  • Rating

  • Cues

If a horse is removed from training prior to completion of the barrel racing program, Arizona Performance Horses offers no guarantee of the accomplishment of training and outcomes.

Possible exposure options, though no guarantee:

  • Dogs, cattle, goats, lambs, and other livestock

  • Competition- UPRA, AABRA, NHSFR, PRCA, AQHA, EXCA, NRCHA, NCHA, AZCHA, SACHA, 4-H, SABRA, team roping, barrel racing, rodeo- depending on availability

  • Fire/ Fireworks/ Firearms

While we offer no guarantee of a timeline for a horse to complete the barrel racing program, on average we expect to complete barrel racing training between 30-60 days. If a longer time is needed, the Arizona Performance Horses trainer will discuss other needed training options with the owner. If something on the possible exposure option is highly important or other desired goals, please discuss it further with Arizona Performance Horses trainers to ensure as much exposure as possible.

Barrel racing is offered on-site and off-site on a full-time or part-time basis based on the needs of the horse and owner/ rider though on-site is STRONGLY encouraged. It is also highly recommended the rider take lessons with the Arizona Performance Horse trainer to ensure proper knowledge of skills worked on with the horse.
